Weekend break under £300 and under 3 hours – Villajoyosa Alicante Spain

A weekend break under £300 and under 3 hours – this time to Villajoyosa Spain for £250, which is 2 hours 20 minutes flight time from Gatwick.

I’m a big fan of Spain for three reasons. It’s really easy to get to from the UK, you can find a spot with great weather for most of the year and the food and drink is wonderful,  or is that four?

Finding a weekend break for under £300 and under 3 hours from Gatwick has been a mission of mine for a while. I’ve been to several places in the past few years that meet my criteria so decided it needs to be “a thing”. On this trip, I was seeking some sunny March weather, after some appalling weeks of rain in the UK.

Where is Villajoyosa?

I flew into Alicante and hired a car at the airport.  I drove about 40 minutes along the coast towards the high rises of Benidorm, to turn off at Villajoyosa, which is a small fishing town that retains a lot of it’s authentic Spanish atmosphere.  Check out my itinerary page for more details.

As you can see Villajoyosa is super pretty with cute, colorful fisherman’s cottages along the front. It’s actually possible to rent some of these for a holiday.

I spotted this spear fisherman returning to the beach, I don’t think he’d caught any.

Where did you stay?

I stayed in the lovely new Hotel Censal which is just above the beach, you can reach it via a path through a nice park within a couple of minutes. I had a small double room, with a shower room at the back of the hotel,  which was very comfortable. A fantastic breakfast was served in the cafe on the ground floor and I was looked after well.

It has a small pool and relaxing area on the roof, that had marvelous views over the sea.

What is there to do?

Aside from wandering in the old town with it’s fascinating coloured cottages and tiny wee doors, there are some great places to eat and soak up the sun; alternatively swimming in the clear waters of the beach would lovely (had it not been March I would have gone in). There’s also a small marina and the Valor chocolate factory.

I spent the Sunday in Alicante, where I walked around the Castle Santa Barbara, the old town and the Marina. Sadly I arrived too late to visit the Volvo Ocean Race museum, which looked excellent.

Top tip

When hiring a car, pick the smallest….then you can take advantage of the only space left that no one else will attempt to park in 🙂

Finally

I had just 2 days in spain and really just made the most of the lovely sunny weather and 24c temperature.

Let me know if you have any suggestions under £300 weekend breaks!
